Although this work fully deals with all the many matters connected with the art of living in Australia, its principal object is the attempt to bring about some improvement in the extraordinary food-habits at present in vogue. For years past the fact that our people live in direct opposition to their semi-tropical environment has been constantly before me. As it will be found in the opening portion of the chapter on School Cookery, the consumption of butcher's meat and of tea is enormously in excess of any common sense requirements, and is paralleled nowhere else in the world. On the other hand, there has been no real attempt to develop our deep-sea fisheries; market gardening is deplorably neglected, only a few of the more ordinary varieties being cultivated; salads, which are easily within the daily reach of every home, are conspicuous by their absence; and Australian wine, which should be the national beverage of every-day life, is at table—almost a curiosity.

Nearly three years have been occupied in the preparation of this volume, as several of the subjects it treats of have hitherto remained practically unexplored. This statement is not intended to excuse any shortcomings, but simply to explain the impediments which had to be overcome. There has been some little difficulty, therefore, in obtaining information in many instances. At the same time, it must be cheerfully recorded that assistance was freely forthcoming on the part of those from whom it was sought. Quite a number have been interviewed on the topics with which they were familiar; and on several occasions this has necessitated journeys out of Sydney on the writer's part. With the object of making inquiries into the fish supply of Melbourne, also, a special visit was paid to that city. And further, in order to gain an insight into vineyard work and cellar management, an instructive time was passed at Dr. T. Fiaschi's magnificent Tizzana vineyard on the Hawkesbury River.

Written early in the last century, this books offers a window into the past. It is surprising how many of the ideas put forward then as proposed changes for better living, are being advocated today. Some are clearly ahead of their time...others miss the mark. Apparently, all hope for the future of Australia lays in it's wines.

It is only in the last 1/4th of the book that the author finally gets to recipes. Like many recipes of that era, a modern cook will have fun trying to decipher amounts and in some cases ingredients: how much is a "fagot" of herbs? Which herbs? If you are comfortable working around these sorts of challenges, then this is worth the download.

I like these books to see old recipes for sauces, condiments, and other such things. In today's world they are mass produced and have lots of additives - being able to make them myself is healthier, cheaper and can be adjusted to suit our tastes.

Sorry, I wouldn't waste my time on it. If you're a historian or a traveller go for it, but you have to go to about 90% of the book before you find any recipes. I'm sure glad I didn't pay for it.
I was expecting to read some great Australian recipes but instead found most to be straight European recipes (most being French and English classical dishes), no great settlers, miners or housewives recipes with no stringy bark scones, miners damper, tomato and pineapple jams or pumpkin scones. So if you are looking for something with authentic early Australian everyday recipes or recipes similar to CWA's (Country Women's Association) then you may wish to look elsewhere, but if you are happy to have a few great old English and French recipes then this is the book you want with most of the basic classic restaurant sauces etc.. found in every chapter that are still the basis of great meals the world over in our time.
This is a very interesting book. It gives insight into living in Australia that is not evident on the surface. I endorse this book for its in depth look at Australia.
